Abstract. Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon in their Dallara Honda DW12s brought Ganassi Racing a one-two victory in the 2012 edition of the Indianapolis 500 after a fierce fight with former Japanese Grand Prix driver Takuma Sato in the final laps of the race. Pole sitter Ryan Briscoe from Team Penske, partly dropping down in the rankings to 13th place,  finished 5th position behind Tony Kanaan and Oriol Servia.  The 2012 Indy 500 was that one with the hottest climate conditions and the most lead changes in history with seven pace car periods overall. From start to finish both the Ganassi drivers were involved in the fight for the lead. Scotsman Franchitti, whose ancestors  one had come from Italy and who is married to famous Hollywood actress Ashley Judd, won despite he had been rammed by E.J. Viso very early in lap 15 during his first pit stop to hit a wheel lying on the ground damaging his front wing. At the end, with 13 laps to go, Tony Kanaan was leading, but after the re-start after the last pace car period he was overtaken by the Ganassi drivers and Sato. These three drivers finally fought for victory, but when the Japanese tried to attack leading Franchitti, he spun and crashed nearly taking the Scot with him. It was Franchitti`s third win at Indianapolis and he dedicated his triumph to late  twice winner Dan Wheldon, who had been killed in Las Vegas in 2011. While Wheldon`s widow Susie was among the guests, Mike Conway survived a similar accident in lap 79 completely unhurt. Former Ferrari and Benetton Grand Prix driver Jean Alesi from France giving his Indy 500 debut at Lotus retired very early in lap 9 caused by handling problems, but the other great man from Formula One, Brazil`s Rubens Barrichello, finished a fine 11th position in his maiden oval race.      KM
